Looks like the LA police got my dude Sky Balla as he's about to enter into his 3rd year of a 5 year bid. Its not exactly clear what the charges were but its based on the shaky testimony of a prostitute who says he beat her up. The DA entered kidnapping to the mix and there you go.. 5 years in the klink. Word is, the charges are extremely exaggerated but they were gunnin for him. Its too bad because his music career was really beginning to take off and we even kicked it when he came to NY. There's nothing more annoying than whiny "hip-hop purists" who can't accept the fact that there's kids out there evolving the culture. Get over it dude.. the evolution of hip-hop has been going on since its inception. Its whats kept it alive for so long. Its about to be 2010 and if todays artists were doing the same shit artists were doing in the 90's, no one would care. Face it, everyone gets old and we can't live in a snapshot of our generation. Hating on the next generation just makes you look like that bitter old man you used to hate back in the day.

This New Boyz track is a perfect example of kids making a clear departure from what most of us grew up on. It got some of that 'get light' dance flave to it (although I'm sure they call it some other shit - 'jerk' maybe). They talk about getting chicks, how they can dance better than each other and their gear is off the hook... I like the fresh vibe but some of these kids take that skinny jean shit to a new level. Do they have to remove a ball to fit those joints??? Damn!

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF (IN DANCE)

My boy (and rap veteran) Stan Ipcus also runs a boys/girls club in Westchester and he's caught some incredible footage of his kids dancing. The "Get Light" "Get Dark" movement really seems to be a real evolution of hip hop dance and is filtering into music as well. Personally I love to see the creativity of young people taking a culture and making it their own. Its the essence of what art is all about... A friend of mine (@mikemancini) twittered some old video of what seems to be a couple of guys dancing the Charleston with "Around the World" dubbed over it. When I watched it, I immediately thought about the Get Light vids I'd seen on Ips blog (westcheddar.com). If you look at the dance moves in both of these videos and the way they take turns, its uncanny how similar they are. I'm sure its completely coincidental but still amazing considering these videos are a lifetime apart.

(Make sure to play both videos at the same time but mute the top one! Crazy!)

A lot of my bronx customers complain that there aren't many dope boutiques in the borough to cop fresh gear. Thats changed with the recent renovation of 4U - House of Fitteds. For 10 years they've been the most well known spot to cop fitted hats in the Bee Ex, however their clothing always seemed to be an afterthought. That changed a couple of months ago when the owner Li renovated the store to more of a boutique format and brought in some sick new brands. Of course Dirty JAX is still holding it down on the racks but he now has some of the freshest wears from Shmack, Rocksmith, Mishka, Lira, The Loots, Alador & Smith, IM King and Jeepney. 4U is located underneath the 5 train on White Plains Rd and Allerton Ave.
